Jennifer Ciotta at Literary Traveller interviews Peter Kubicek and writes in her introduction:
As the Germans dismembered Czechoslovakia in March 1939, Peter Kubicek was a 9 year-old Jewish boy living in Slovakia. Soon Jews faced the horrifying reality of looming deportations to Nazi concentration camps. Peter Kubicek was no exception. As a child, Kubicek endured two Slovak fascist camps and six German camps, and even more remarkably, lived to tell his story. In his book, 1000: 1 ODDS, Memoir of a World War II Childhood, Kubicek retells his story of sadness, suffering and what he credits as pure “luck.”
