Steps to creating a caricature for commission – Part 2 –completing the painting.

Last week I was relating how I’d had an “Urgent” Commission.

I explained the general process. The most difficult stage is really the composition and initial drawing. Sometimes ideas pop up with each draft, the next draft can then be used to work these ideas out. movement lines are especially. There are certain rules which must be applied, such as movement lines must not touch the “moving” objects.

After inking in the pencil lines, I set the picture aside to dry before rubbing out the pencil.

Next stage is painting, which is fairly straightforward. Sometimes I will use  French ultramarine and paynes grey to under-paint the shadows on the face. Before going over them in burnt sienna, yellow ochre and a touch of Alizarin Crimson.

With a gift caricature there is always an element of subterfuge. Usually it’s the client who has to weave complex plots and distraction to facilitate the picture. This time I needed a picture inside the school, but how to do it without being spotted. I had a window of opportunity while the school was at a church service. I was a little concerned sneaking onto school premises with a camera. Fortunately it’s a small village school and people know me! Why the need? Well there is a fabulous wooden train around the back of the school and it was too good a subject not to include.

What do you think? Here is the finished caricature.…

Most subterfuge relates to communications, often in code with false appointments or arrangements. I stop short of actual lies, but sometimes I struggle, especially if the subject is well known to me.

A recent caricature I undertook was for some friends. The husband was the subject and plans were well underway. I happened to strike up a conversation during which he’d discovered I created caricature paintings. He asked if I’d be able to do one of his wife. I soooo wanted to laugh out loud at the irony. It was all I could do to contain myself! But was unable to enlighten either partner with the truth!

Fortunately such instances are part of the joy of being an artist!

Steps to creating a caricature for commission

I’m dead excited! Went to a networking meeting last week.

Ok, so not exciting as such but there’s more…

This morning I had a phonecall. As a result I sold 2 abstracts and I have a commission for a caricature. With all the preparation for the Art Fair at the weekend, I haven’t done any caricatures.

Buildings 4, check

Caricatures any, no!

So, I thought it you might like to hear about the process when I’m given a commission.

1.       Information gathering. I find out what interests the subject, what items the commissioner would like to have incorporated, is there anything I need to be careful about? Etc.

I also ask for photographs or arrange to take them, depending on the occasion.

2.       Next I make 3 or 4 rough draft sketches where I try to include all the items included on the list established in step one. These are some examples. As you can see, they’re very sketchy and there is no attempt at likeness, they are purely compositional ideas.Man playing guitar

3.      I usually send these to the client, often via email. They then come back to me identifying which elements they like. Sometimes it will be a combination of parts of 2 or 3 pictures.Man playing guitar

4.     Depending on time left – not all clients understand the sense of urgency for their own deadlines! Or the amount of time required to draw and paint – I will then make a final draft which is sent for approval.

5.     I start the drawing in pencil. I will then ink this in. I used to send to client prior to inking in, but if I go wrong, I’d need to redraw, so I feel it’s best to show them the inked image.

6.     Once the ink drawing is approved, I apply colour… but I’ll leave that until next week! Where I will reveal the finished painting. I’m still awaiting client approval.

It’s gone, finally. Completed caricature and Happy client…my work is done!

So, I’ve finally finished the painting I’ve been “working on for months”. I was not working on it for all this time and it wasn’t terribly complicated, but there were an awful lot of delays in communications and the initial photographs used were not a good likeness. After the initial delays I started procrastinating as I had no deadline to work towards…fatal!!!!!!!! Anyhow, here it are two charming redhead girls on the swings and slide at a park overlooking the beach. Oh, and they’ve just finished a snowman who is starting to melt…poor guy! Oh and the doll is a favourite doll which has been decorated by the child and is never clothed!

This is the first time I’ve used Hot pressed watercolour paper for a painting. I’ve tended to use Bristol board but it has a very shiny surface which doesn’t take the paint very well.
I’ve been thinking it might be time to revisit some of my earlier caricatures, especially Richard Hammond, I think I can do so much better now.

They liked it!

cI've just had a letter in the post, Sam and Dan like the caricature. I feel happy about posting it now so here they are! Wishing them both a very long and happy marriage

I think I might need to do some cropping of this, but that will happen later. I've been far too bogged down with promotional stuff my production rate has dropped. I have completed one picture for the BAFA competition. Second one halfway there and third piece I've ironed out some problems... Forward Ho!

Another completed commission

Finally handed over this latest commission - I have been given permission to post it prior to the "victim" receiving it! Hope he likes it.

I can hear guitar lovers wincing at the thought of opening a bottle on the guitar neck! Noooooooo! Just in case you're reading this Jeremy! ;-)

The rest of the day has been spent packing up artwork for the craft sale tomorrow. Hope it goes well but only time will tell. I had to get some more cellophane and was struck by the cellophane being wrapped in cellophane. There's something delightfully ironic about it, but then, what else would you wrap a roll of cellophane with?

Another successful commission!

This picture was done a while ago for a friend from church. It's been quite difficult keeping this quiet as I see the client and her husband on a regular basis and getting pictures too and from was difficult without raising suspicion as both are usually present. Anyway, job done and this came through my door today.

Note

I may get paid but this sort of thing really gives me a buzz! And the reason for the note, received by him today is ...

Charles

This was a fun one to do but tricky to get all the details in without making it look too cluttered.

Anyway, back to my current commission!

Finished doggy pic

This is the picture I've been working it. I think it's finished but I'm waiting on the client's approval. I've already altered it once as the dog is very shy and won't keep her ears up when photographed. So the ears are 80% guesswork but apparently correct.

Racing Car/Football caricature

Ben Clucas 003This is the commission I completed Friday - strictly speaking Saturday as I had to lighten a few colours on Saturday morning. It was a bit of a squeeze fitting it in with my eldest being ill. Also the suspension had me cross-eyed on a few occasions - I was working on an image of a black car with little definition. Having said all that, I am pleased with the result and this morning received the following response from the Client.

"Thank you very much for [the caricature] and getting it done so quickly. You really did a brilliant job.

If you ever need any recommendations or quotes if you advertise at all, feel free to ask me."

Well worth it!!!!!!

Christmas commission

CIMG3500

Finally able to post this picture which was done prior to Christmas. This one was fun to do but I had to wait a while for pictures. Now I'm going to look for some more celebrity pics, not sure who to do...

Robbie Williams commission

Robbie and Alison 002 This was a picture I was asked to do a while ago. I did modify the likeness of Robbie after I copied it, but forgot to scan it again before I gave it to the client.

Latest Commission

Callum -finishedFinally a picture to post. This was done for today, so I'm allowed to publish without fear of ruining the surprise. It took a few attempts to find the right arrangement for the various elements but I think I managed to strike the right balance. The bike was a bit frustrating, I kept having to move it and redraw it, and the handlebars just didn't look symmetrical. I was really pleased with the sea, especially to the right of the skateboarder.

I've one more commission to finish then it's back to the celebrities.Who knows I might get Halle Berry finished before the week is out.

Cricket Caricatures

CraigFinalCopy TinaFinalCopy

Here are the pictures as promised. I'm really pleased with them, I think they mark a significant step towards the professional finish I've been aiming for. They are both Watercolours, so aren't as vibrant or Smooth as the marker pens. I've photographed them through the cellophane which has given an interesting effect in places!
