Johnny Depp is now one of the biggest heartthrobs in Hollywood, but the actor claims he wasn't always so suave and debonair. He said he was a "complete freak" as a kid, and has only become truly at ease with himself since meeting longtime girlfriend Vanessa Paradis. Aww!

He admitted: "When I was growing up I felt a complete freak. Very strange. I felt weird at five. At the age of 12 it was me against the world. I remember locking myself in my bedroom and playing my guitar. It seemed like I was in there for two or three years."

However, the 47-year-old actor has learned to accept himself since finding love with Vanessa 12 years ago, and admits he views his life in two stages, before and after meeting the French singer-and-actress.

He explained: "The most important thing is that Vanessa has made me not have to pretend any more about who I am. I feel comfortable with myself. My life is divided in two. In the time before I met Vanessa, I was searching for something. Since our time together I have found it. She keeps me calm. There were times when I was burning inside."

Tim Burton & Johnny Depp Turn to Vampires Soap Opera with DARK SHADOWS Remake

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Johnny Depp’s next film (after finishing the next installment of Pirates of the Caribbean) will be the Tim Burton re-imagining of the classic vampire soap opera Dark Shadows.

Apparently, Johnny Depp loved Dark Shadows show as a child and has been pushing the project with Burton's help for quite a few years. The film will start production April 2011.

Depp will portray Barnabas Collins, a vampire living in a Maine manor who is searching for his lost love.
If you're like me and you've I'never seen Dark Shadows here is some information about the series (which by the way seems like a much better show than Days of Our Lives, All My Children, etc.):
Dark Shadows is a gothic soap opera that originally aired weekdays on the ABC television network, from June 27, 1966 to April 2, 1971. The show was created by Dan Curtis, who tells of a dream he had in which a girl takes a long train ride to visit a large mansion. The story "bible," which was written by Art Wallace, does not mention any supernatural elements. It was unprecedented in daytime television when ghosts were introduced about six months after it began.
The series became hugely popular when, a year into its run, vampire Barnabas Collins (played by Jonathan Frid) appeared. Dark Shadows also featured werewolves, ghosts, zombies, man-made monsters, witches, warlocks, time travel (both into the past and into the future), and a parallel universe.
I've had about enough of vampires over the last couple of years, but Depp and Burton do routinely make some unique and unforgettable movies.

What do you guys think? Are we done with vampires? Or is this exciting to you?

Donna Summer and Johnny Depp

Donna Summer colourI'm getting a bit behind with my posts - note to myself be more vigilant. These are my most recent offerings. I'm definitely going off marker paper, it's too thin and weedy for the task, and tends to warp when I use the airbrush on it. Bristol board is a much nicer surface to be working on and the results scan better. No prizes for guessing which one was done on which paper!

More colour

I fiddled with the Graham Norton image, still not sure about the mouth so I think I'll leave it and go back.

Below are last night and this mornings efforts, the lovely Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. This is definitely a portrait, I'll try a caricature later but I really wanted to work on a finished portrait drawing. I could work more on it but I like the impressionist style. I had to scan the unfinished one this morning as it looks so bizarre with the blue under-painting. It started out as watercolour but I decided to use some acrylic ink to add some depth to the colour. I had fun with the hair but nearly had to discard the whole thing when I removed the masking and it took half the paper around the right eye with it! The ink also bled under the masking quite badly in one place, fortunately it was in an area that was going to be made darker, so it can't be seen. I must learn to be more patient and allow the layers to dry before later painting. I think I've managed to rescue it? Will probably concentrate on some quick sketches later on and try taking my gear up to the school this p.m.
