The Virgin Maria Auxiliatrix’s Sanctuary was last visited by the Papacy in 1996, a visit by then Pope John Paul II in May of that year. The Feast for this Sanctuary is on May 24 each year.
The Virgin Maria Auxiliatrix showed on tv today originates from the Napoleonic wars of Europe. The official site of the Sanctuaries of Notre Dame de Lourdes lists the Virgin Maria Auxiliatrix’s information as follows:
The Sanctuary originates from a vow made by a soldier at the time of the Napoleonic wars in Europe. He promised that he returned safe and sound he would produce a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is why the Sanctuary is why the Sanctuary is dedicated to Maria Auxiliatrix (Auxilium = help). 2007 will be the centenary of the crowning of the statue. The Sanctuary is linked with Croatia and especially with the Sanctuary of Marija Bistrica. Pope John-Paul II visited the Sanctuary as a pilgrim on 17th May 1996. The Feast of the Sanctuary is on 24th May.”
