Types of Breakfast and Breakfast Food

The word breakfast means to break the fast after a long time. It originally started in England where they used to have a lot of courses. In the breakfast cooked items such as ham, bacon, fruit juices and cereals are served.

Types of breakfast

* Breakfast a la carte

Breakfast a la carte contains coffee, juice, fruit and four different entrees to choose from.

* American breakfast

Generally includes most or all of the following: two eggs (fried or poached), sliced bacon or sausages, sliced bread or toast with jam/jelly/butter, pancakes with syrup, cornflakes or other cereal, coffee/tea, and orange/grapefruit juice. Also called American style breakfast.

* Buffet breakfast

A buffet means a counter or long table with a variety of food for informal eating . In American eateries, breakfast buffets usually consist of long, narrow, stainless steel steam tables with attached "sneeze guards" holding individual stainless steel or plastic "pans" that fit together in the hold over hot water with heat lamps above. It is breakfast so there are traditional American breakfast foods such as, scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, bacon, sausage, ham, corned beef hash, southern gravy and biscuits, English muffins, and bagles. In an iced "salad bar table" there could be fresh fruit, fruit juices, or an assortment of coffee cakes and other pastries. There is usually a set price for this type of meal and you can eat as much as you want.

* Continental breakfast

Generally includes most or all of the following: Sliced bread with butter/jam/honey, cheese, meat, croissants and danish pastries, rolls, fruit juice and coffee/tea/chocolate/hot milk. It is served commonly in continental Europe, North America, and elsewhere, as opposed to the English breakfast, which is served commonly in the UK.

* Cooked breakfast

A breakfast consisting of cooked food, usually including eggs, often together with bacon, sausages or tomatoes. It is usually followed by toast and tea or coffee.

* English breakfast

Traditional breakfast (also called full breakfast, and served in inns or restaurants) may include cereals, porridge or stewed prunes, melon, yogurt, boiled eggs or bacon and eggs, grilled fish, sausages, grilled or fried mushrooms or tomatoes with fried bread, followed by toasted bread and marmalade and tea or coffee. Modern English breakfast (served in hotels or motels) may include cereals, bacon and eggs, toasted bread and marmalade with tea or coffee.

* Full breakfast (or cooked breakfast)

A full breakfast is a traditional cooked meal, typically and originally eaten at breakfast, though now often served at other times during the day. Common alternative names for the dish include bacon and eggs, or the fry-up.

* Wedding breakfast

In U.K., it is a meal served after wedding: a celebratory meal served after a wedding ceremony.

Types of breakfast food

Breakfast is often lauded as the most important meal of the day. Studies have shown that eating breakfast everyday is beneficial to overall health and well-being; for example, The Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey showed that people who skipped breakfast had a higher risk of obesity. Everyone has preferences when it comes to eating breakfast, and fortunately there are a variety of foods to choose from.

Cereals

Breakfast cereals often come prepackaged in boxes and are usually served cold with dairy or soy milk poured on top. Cereals high in vitamins and fiber can bode well for health benefits, while other name-brand cereals may have high sugar content. There are also hot cereal-based foods to choose from like cream of wheat, cream of rice and oatmeal.

Meats

Breakfast meats are a staple on many breakfast tables; these foods are often cooked on the stove top and served hot. Generally any type of meat can be eaten for breakfast, but bacon, sausage and steak are popular dishes using meat from turkey, beef and pork to prepare them.

Fruit and Parfait

Fruits and parfaits are included in many continental breakfasts because they are convenient and easy to prepare. Fruit is served sliced or whole, hot or cold, or mixed together with other breakfast foods. Parfaits are fruit mixtures that are made by combining diced fruit with different food toppings like yogurt, granola, Jell-O and whipped cream.

Eggs

Eggs are a versatile and popular breakfast option because of the many ways they can be prepared. Eggs are usually served hot and are often prepared soft or hard boiled, scrambled, fried, poached, or made into omelets.

Pancakes and Waffles

Pancakes and waffles are made from batter-based cake mixtures. Pancake batter is poured onto a griddle or frying pan and the cakes are fried on both sides. Waffles are cooked in a special waffle iron that has a cross-patterned design of indentations. Both are often served topped with butter and maple syrup.

Bread and Pastries

Bread and pastries are common breakfast staples that are available in a variety of selections. Options range from toast, rolls, bagels and biscuits to sweet danishes and croissants. They can be served hot or cold, and with a choice of condiment toppings like cream cheese, jam and butter.
