It would appear the idea of secession is still alive and well in the United States, as witness the proposed Rightist state of "Southern California" that would isolate Leftists in "Northern California."
This is the problem with secession. Once it begins this continent wide country will subdivide into ever smaller and smaller regional grouping until the level of a Middle Ages fiefdom is reached, and very likely each one complete with a castle, baron and endless wars with neighbor fiefdoms.
I will grant you the final solution to the most serious constitutional crisis since 1861 may well be a Second more terrible U.S. Civil War, however, when the bullets and bombs finally stop flying this country will be once again what it was in 1865 - half wrecked and dead but united, as American republicans understand that scores of tiny warring countries in North America will be nothing more than the homelands of famine and tyranny.
